Why your health should be the first step in any life change.
There are many things in life that can trigger the need for change. Things like work or relationships can lead to a gradual mental anguish or a sudden realization you need to exit right now! They can whisper away or could be obvious, like a break-up from a toxic relationship.
Once your awareness has been heightened in this situation it’s common to be feeling lost.
So what should you do in this moment?
There are a couple of alternatives here. For obvious external factors causing pain or potential danger it is a priority to remove yourself from them immediately.
On the other side of that and more commonly, you are at a stage of uncertainty. In this feeling you will take a calm and effective path, this path will have a positive snowball effect on the rest of your life. This option is physical health.
Rather than pushing this uncertainty under the rug with distracting activities like alcohol, gossip and social media, we want you to address them early on so that you don’t hit a boiling point later in life.
You may of heard of a “mid life crisis”.
Not all cases are the same but I personally don’t see why someone quitting their job, changing their look and buying a new car is labelled a crisis but that can be the topic of another article.
If you have hit this point, I suggest holding off on leaving your significant other and children and just focus on yourself. Don’t run away like a scared child. We want you to be in the best possible state for making life changes and gain this state through focusing on your health.
Here’s why.
Being health focused teaches you to think about you.
To begin with, this is not selfish. The majority of the drive I have is associated with others. I feel a responsibility to be able to support them in any way I can and the people closest to me don’t expect that, this is something I’ve placed upon myself.
What I’ve come to realize though is that my ability to give is determined by how much I look after myself. Sleeping well, eating healthy and insuring that I have fulfillment in all areas of my life gives me an abundance of energy to give to others.
When we are in a lower state of mind, common patterns arise, such as people pleasing, making others guilty and projecting your world onto others. These patterns are negative and outwardly focused, stemming from unhappiness within.
Shifting that focus internally for the time being will take away the negative energy that you are placing on others.
It highlights the fact that results only come from actions.
If only thinking about what we wanted produced results, we would all be living the life of our dreams. Thankfully only those who earn it get to receive the reward. (Referring to people that do have opportunity). Adding exercise into your life requires lots of small actions. Finding a gym, scheduling time to work out and having clothes ready are all things that need to take place after the initial thought. Although these things seem small, they will shift your focus from dwelling on your pain to living the plan. This in itself will bring you an instant increase in happiness.
It allows you to use logical thought processes.
We are driven by emotions but when we are too engulfed in our feelings we become stagnate. Shifting our thoughts into the processes of a healthy lifestyle can have a calming effect. Training 3-4 times a week at 60% of your max heart rate and eating X amount of calories. It all sounds robotic and it is but this is what creates momentum.
Seek a professional to create an exercise program for you. It’s easy to let yourself down so get others involved because we are more likely to not want to let them down.
A better YOU makes better decisions
What are your thoughts on the future when you feel crap? Are you at your desk thinking “I love my life, maybe I might take my wife out for dinner?”
No?
Plan and action two days of healthy eating, ensure you get the right amount of sleep and have a workout. On the third day reassess your view on the world. You will find you are out of a state of hopelessness; your frustrations will then turn to energy. Use that energy and move into more action.
If you look good you attract quality people into your world
This point would have been far more valid 10yrs ago, and I feel will be next to meaningless in the next few years but we’ll take some good from it for now. Focusing purely on your outer shell will never be the answer to your challenge, it is only the foundation. Our body and mind are constantly sending messages back and forth. If your health is better, you have better mental energy, that leads to better posture, better facial expressions and a far more pleasing vibe. This aura will attract others that also share this positive energy, creating a positive pattern that continues to grow stronger.
For positive change, environments need to change.
This is an extension of the ‘action’ step but it’s important to reinforce the need to change your environment. Don’t seek perfection with the change but shift a pattern in your life, sooner rather than later. Otherwise you may slumber back into your current world and the feeling may not come up again for months or even years.
Start with an appointment based training regime. Small group training, a boot camp or a 1-1 session with a trainer. Something that you’ve paid for and you are required show up for. A normal gym membership or going for a run is something that can be easily avoided without consequence.
Allow your new positive energy to have an impact on others.
Once you get yourself in check you’ll notice that the mental space for an outwardly approach. Your projection onto the world will shift and you’ll be able to help others through what you have just experienced. I hope this helps you get a start on becoming a better, more energized version of yourself. From this point is where the magic begins to happen. People and situations start coming into your life that you may not have been aiming for.
Take positive actions in the right direction and don’t be attached to a past idealism. The real goal here is to be happy!
