Balance Training – Righting vs Tilting | Day #129 WellFit 365
Specificity of balance training – The righting vs Tilting reflex
Balance training is a really important facet of any training program, particularly when people are training “sport specific”.
However a lot of people tend to go straight for the BOSU ball for their balance training and this may not be the most useful tool for them.
There is 2 different reflexes in the human body that control balancing on stable and unstable surfaces. Training for one will not improve the other, so we need to be very specific with our training types.
For sports that are played on the ground, these are predominantly “righting reflex” sports and balance exercises should be completed on the ground.
For sports such as skiing, skateboarding, surfing etc that are competed on unstable surfaces we need to train the “tilting reflex” which is where your BOSU, dynadiscs and wobble boards come in to play.
Be sure that you are wasting your valuable time in the gym and choose the right exercises for your goals.
